Our Bishop
Here is the scripture the Bishop's father often quoted, taught, and gave to the Bishop upon his passing away:
The Lord has said what is good, and what it is the Lord requires of you, to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8
The Bishop has always worked in 'secular' positions to support himself and the ministry of the Church. The Bishop was a program administrator for a nationally recognized behavioral health hospital. He has worked as a corrections administrator for state government, and as a professional financial planner. One of his favorite occupations has been hospice chaplaincy. Working with the terminally ill is more rewarding than one may imagine. The immense sense of life is at the very moment of our passing away from this life.
The Bishop has a Bachelor of Arts in Religion (Historical and Comparative), a Master of Theology (Clinical and Pragmatic Theology), and a Doctorate of Sacred Theology. A doctorate of sacred theology is an ecclesiastical degree that is equivalent to a doctorate of theology, which is equivalent to a doctorate of philosophy, in terms of academic requirements and expectations. One distinction of a doctorate of sacred theology is its emphasis on demonstrating competency through projects rather than theses or dissertations. Putting thinking into action.
A New Ecumenical Ministry for Applied Theology
The Bishop instituted A New Ecumenical Ministry for Applied Theology to begin a work of spiritual and religious healing for our segmented and unrooted society. While possessing the identifiable characteristics of the Ancient Catholic traditions, we are reaching out and beyond the limitations that have grown up and around human-made boundaries of thoughts and practices...thoughts and practices that were never even suggested by our God through the prophets and the apostles. Taking the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth with its beauty and simplicity and finding critical points of inclusion, understanding and reconciliation to a broader spectrum of human experience. We believe this approach and process is possible and necessary, without sacrificing the essential nature of the teachings and without denying the truth resident in the person of Jesus, our Master, our Rabboni.
We believe our approach is within the ministerial vision of Dom Carlos Duarte Costa, who wrote:
The movement coming into being now in Brazil, and possibly branching out into other nations of the American continent and other continents, has as its purpose the centralization of the person of Christ, in an effort to achieve harmony and concord among religions, allowing the absolute guarantee of civil, political, philosophical and religious liberty, not permitting any person to be questioned under any pretext with respect to his beliefs with the end of conditioning or limiting his rights or duties. Within wide educational and scientific freedom the activity of thought would be allowed to develop the fullest of its capacity.
